I decided to do the Happiness Jar challenge. It is only 8 AM and what makes me happy is that the semester is coming to an end. Also, I will be able to take a break over the winter and catch up on much needed sleep. My friends and family are healthy and that makes me happy and content. There is hope to end this semester strong and with good grades. What else could I ask for ?

Burmese Painting

I've always been interested in Burmese culture and wanted to learn more about the relation to Jataka stories

Again the Sikh man dancing out in the arctic is my favorite video. He is so lively and has so much energy!

Hope everyone has a great week ahead and stay healthy :)

Famous Last Words: Cyberpunk 2077

I am super excited for this video game ( Cyberpunk 2077 ) that is supposed to release on December 10th. The game had four delays this year and was announced 8 years ago. It is supposed to be the biggest game ever released and the anticipation is really high. I am anxious because games like these have disappointed before and that would not be great for the gaming session in winter break !

Actor Keanu Reeves is playing an NPC
The actor Keanu Reeves is supposed to play a major role in the game. This will make the game more exciting and immersive!

Wikipedia Trail from Hastinapur to the Tibetian Empire

 Hastinapur

Hastinapur acts as the Capital of the Kuru kingdom in Mahabharata and where the events of the Mahabharata unfold. I was imagining the story of Ganga and ended up thinking about the city.

Uttar Pradesh

Modern day Hastinapur is said to be here. This state fascinates me due to it's sheer population. It is the most populated state/subdivision in the world. It desperately needs to fight with corruption and focus on better education and healthcare.

Urdu

It is widely spoken in Uttar Pradesh. However is the lingua franca of Pakistan. It is 98% similar to Hindi in vocabulary and they together comprise Hindustani.

Sanksrit

Urdu still comprises native Sanskrit words and there have been attempts to purge them out. Sanskrit can be considered the oldest proper language and hence is exceedingly complex to understand at times.

Yudishtira arriving at Hastinapur

After the end of the war, the Pandavas, led by the eldest arrive at the Capital of their kingdom.

Week 13 StoryLab: Shiva and Creation

When the gods created the universe, Lord Brahma was entrusted with populating Earth. He created a wish born child, Daksha. Daksha and his wife Prastuti, had numerous children that were married off to gods and goddesses. Sati, the youngest one was his favourite and he detested that she was to marry Lord Shiva. Sati grew up to be one of the most beautiful women on Earth and there were innumerable suitors who wanted to marry her. However, Sati wanted to fulfill her destiny and heads off to Kailasa to marry Lord Shiva. Shiva pleased by her devotion, immediately marries her. Daksha felt insulted as his daughter married a hermetic like Lord Shiva and decides to avenge his pride.

Daksha organises a grand yajna (ritual sacrifice) and decides to invite all gods except Shiva and Sati. Sati remarks furiously that she is owed an explanation. As Shiva tries to stop her, she continues to rant about her father and he proceeds to insult Lord Shiva. Invoking a sacrificial fire, Sati immolates and sacrifices herself. Lord Shiva vows to destroy Daksha and brings forth Virabhadra and Bhadrakali as a manifestation of his anger. They destroy Daksha's army and behead him, while the gods try to save him. Lord Shiva carries Sati's body on his shoulder and wanders the Universe, which worries the gods about the balance of the universe. Ultimately, Lord Vishnu used his sudarshana chakra to cut Sati's body into 52 pieces that drop on Earth. Each of these places, where Sati's body dropped, is a Kali or Shakti temple.

Author's Notes

I picked this story to contrast with the Genesis story of Christianity and other Abrahamic religions. This version of the story is in line with Valmiki's Ramayana and depicts the short temper of Lord Shiva. There are various stories of this kind in the Puranas, that depict these virtuous. Stories like these depict specific characteristics of thee gods,

Shiva carrying Sati on his shoulder after her death

Shiva parades around the universe with Sati's body on his shoulder. Since, the Trimurtis ( Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma) maintain balance in the universe, the gods feared that an imbalance like this would cause widespread destruction.

Week 13: Reading Wednesday

 Krishna Humbles Arjuna

Arjuna approaches Rama's bridge in Rameshwaram and wonders why Rama did not use arrows to build the bridge. A monkey mocks him and challenges Arjuna to build a bridge of arrows that will support his weight. Arjuna fails to do so as any bridge he builts is toppled by the monkey with one touch. When Arjuna decides to give up and immolate himself, as the terms of the bet were, a mysterious boy appears. He asks for a redo of the trial with a witness. Arjuna succeeds and the monkey reveals itself to be Hanuman. The boy reveals himself to be Lord Krishna. Both Arjuna and Hanuman worship him as Lord Vishnu. Hence, Hanuman is on Arjuna's flag in his chariot.

Week 12 Empathy Challenge: Watch for Empathy

I associate empathy with helping someone without any personal gain in the moment. My mom is a great example because she constantly bugs me and checks on me during the pandemic. I have learnt to embrace it and understand where she is coming from. I would like to work on my skills and showcase empathy to the right people - the people that deserve it .

Dolphin

The first thing that I thought of while writing this post was a dolphin. Perhaps we should be more "empathetic" towards them and let them live in their natural habitat.

 Rameswaram

My mind was on Lord Ram and for a strange reason, Rameswaram came into memory. It is on the south eastern coast in Tamil Nadu, and is considered a hotspot for beautiful temples. There are several pilgrimages within the city.

Puranas

The literal translation in Sanskrit is old . Even in Hindi, Purana means old. It is believed to be compiled by Vyasa ( the author of the Mahabharata.

Vyasa

Considered to be one of the Chiranjeevis ( immortals), it puts the timeline of his existence into question. This makes it extremely difficult to guess the date of the Mahabharata.

Hastinapur

The place where the events of Mahabharata unfold before the War. Hastina menas 'Elephant' while some believe the name comes from King Hasti. The 100 Kaurava brothers were born here to Gandhari.

Hastinapur

It is speculated that Hastinapur was situated somewhere around Meerut, Uttar Pradesh.

Famous Last Words: Hip Hop Performance

Last week I talked about my Hip Hop class and my fear of going on stage to recite my poem . The recitation went great and I made a good grade in the first part of my final. This week we are supposed to sing a rap song on stage and mimic the artist's style. I am looking forward to it but it would be quite difficult to get back on flow, especially without a beat to back me up. I decided to pick Kendrick Lamar's Poetic Justice ! It is one of my favorite songs and I am glad to be able to sing it in front of my class.

I picked Lil Dicky's song, Earth  for this post ! Hope y'all have a great time listening to it !

Shiva statue in Benoni, South Africa

Statues in Hinduism are significant and the one depicted in the picture shows the spread of Hinduism around the world. It resembles a statue from a temple back home in India !

The video on Diwali caught my attention as it is festival season in India! I miss home a lot during these times and can't wait to go back and celebrate festivals again. Festivals are a huge part of growing up in India. You learn to embrace the chaos and miss it quite often. Chaos is good !

Week 12 Story Lab: Microfiction

YUDHISHTHIRA'S GAMBLING

Duryodhan, the eldest among the Kauravas was constantly meddled in jealousy towards his cousins- the Pandavas. He devised a plan with his uncle Shakuni, to destory the Pandavas. They challenged Yudhishtira to a game of dice and knew that he wouldn't refuse. Yudhishtira's pride and a curse from King Drupad drove him to lose stake after stake against the masterful gambler Shakuni. After losing everything, Shakuni aksed Yudhishtira to gamble his wife Draupadi. Yudhishtira lost again and Draupadi was summoned to the court. She pleaded to the king and begged to be free from slavery as promised to Duryodhan.
Prince Dushasan tore off  Draupadi's garments and tried to undress her. However, she folded her hands and started praying to Lord Krishna. As she was getting undressed, the lord clothed her and Dushasan ceased. Bhima now fueled with vengeance against his cousins, exclaims that he would drink the life-blood out of Dushasan and break Duryodhan's thighs in half. Even though King Dhritarashtra freed the Pandavas from slavery, they lost another round of gambling. They had to be exiled for 12 years and give away their kingdom to the Kauravas. When the events of the Kurukshetra war unfolded, Karma came full circle and Bhima slayed Dushasan and Duryodhan exactly like he claimed.

Author's Note
This story dives into the negative effects of an uncontrollable ego and karma. Yudhishtira loses his wife in a gambling game and doesn't defend her honour. The Kauravas try to assault Draupadi but suffer the consequences later.

Week 12: Wednesday Reading

The Battle of Kurukshetra was the largest conflict in Bharata (Indian subcontinent). The Kauravas and Pandavas had fierce warriors willing to die for their side. Barbarika, the grandson of Bhima and son of Ghatotkacha ( a rakshasa born to Bhima and Hidimbi ), wanted to fight for the Pandava side. However, he has vowed to his mother to always right for the winning side. Amidst the confusion, Lord Krishna approaches Barbarika as a Brahman. Krishna, being arrogant questions Barbarika's might. Barbarika shows Krishna his might arrows in response. He had three of them . One to destroy all his enemies, the other to kill anyone who's left and the last one to defend his from incoming attacks. The divine nature of the arrows, made Barbarika almost invisible and Krisma was worried.
Here Lord Krishna devises a cunning plan. He requests Barbarika to surrender and not fight. Reasoning that any side he fights for would result as the stronger side.  Barbarika agrees to Lord Krishna's request and asks him to let him watch the Kurukshetra Yuddha. Krisha places Barbarika's head on top of the mountain to let him watch the war. After the war, Krishna aks Barbarika, "What did you see?". Barbarika responds, "All I saw was the glory of a Devi and a sudarshana chakra ( Krishna's weapon) making rounds around the battlefield. He was implying that Lord Krishna was in control of the events in Kurukshetra.

Author's Notes:
I picked this story from the Mahabharata because I found it in a book in middle school . I remember reciting the story to my grandma and her reaction. She hadn't heard the story before and was delighted that I was interested in finding stories like these. The story of Barbarika fascinated me on the depth of characters the Mahabharata offers
Barbarika, worshipped in Rajasthan and is seen as a diety there. It's quite uncommon to encounter a temple like this in the subcontinent.

Sita and Ravana
After Sita's imprisonment by Ravana tried wooing her with gold and palaces. She was confines to a beautiful palace with gold floors and rakshashis guarding the gates. While he tried wooing her, Sita refused outright and reminded him that Rama would slay him. Ravana left after giving Sita an ultimatum to accept him or be tortured to death.

Sita and Hanuman
When Hanuman first showed up in front of Sita, she thought it was Ravana trying to deceive her. But when Hanuman showed her his ring, she grew delightful. Hanuman promised to defeat the tyrant alongside Lord Rama and offered to carry her back. Sita refused due to here modesty and told Hanuman about the ultimatum Ravana had given her.

Author's Notes
I picked two continuous stories from the Public domain part of the Ramayana reading. I wanted to catch up on some Ramayana on my blog inorder to add some of my own twists in storytelling this week.

Hanuman would later go on to light Lanka on fire and wreck havoc in Ravana's kingdom.

Rigveda

The Rigveda is the first among the Vedas and can be justly called one of the most ancient Hindu texts. The elements of Agni (fire) in the Rigveda have always fascinated me.

 Devanagiri

The script used by Sanskrit and even modern day Hindi is based on it. I am so glad to be able to read Hindi. As, it lets me understand Sanskrit to a certain degree!

Tibetan Empire

The Tibetans have a long history of relations with the subcontinent and share similar beliefs. I am a huge flag nerd and the TIbetan empire has one of the coolest flags!

Famous Last Words: Hip Hop Class

I have been making music since high school and was super excited to take a class on Hip Hop this semester. However it didn't fit exactly into my schedule like I would want it to. I have to recite a poem in class tomorrow and it seems like the most challenging thing ever. However, I have done enough research on rhyme schemes, I still do not feel as confident. We also have to freestyle rap battle at the end of the semester for a couple of minutes and I am not looking forward to it. To take my mind off the topic, I started listening to older hip hop songs and it honestly made me feel better. Listening to certain songs after years, is like meeting and old friend. I remember trying to memorize this song when I first heard it. It's funny how good music just stays in your memory amid all the chaos. You should definitely check out more music from Kendrick and his early era to get a flashback.

Here are some lines from Kendrick's Poetic Justice :

"Every time I write these words they become a taboo
Making sure my punctuation curve, every letter here's true
Living my life in the margin and that metaphor was proof
I'm talking poetic justice, poetic justice"

This is one of my favourite songs and I'm so glad that I added it to my playlist again

After listening to this album, Kendrick became one of my all time favourite hip hop artists!

Week 11 Story: Krishna's Birth

The story of Lord Krishna's birth begins with a tyrant. In the kingdom of Mathura, King Kansa's atrocities were reaching a tipping point and trouble had reached the heavens. The Shiva devotee was extremely powerful and had various boons that protected him in battle, including several destructive weapons. Answering to the pleas of the gods, Lord Vishnu presumed Krishna's Avatar to end the evil king Kansa.

Kansa unaware of his doom, prepares for the expansion of his kingdom and agrees to let his sister Devaki get married to Yadava prince Vasudeva in the hopes of taking over the Yadava clan too. When Devaki gets married, Kansa is warned by an Akashavani ( a beam from the sky that predicts the future) that one of the offsprings of Devaki would bring his end. In his paranoia, Kansa locks up Devaki and Vasudeva and subject them to a life of misery and captivity. He kills every child Devaki bears and is constantly vigilant about his surroundings.

However on the night of Krishna's birth, a divine light guides Vasudeva to carry Krishna across the Yamuna river to the head of the Gopa tribe, Nandaraja. Nandraja's  wife Yashoda had also given birth. The divine light guides Vasudeva to switch the baby and return to his cell. The gates of the cell open mysteriously and Vasudeva finds every guard unconscious. As he steps out with Krishna in a basket, he gazes at the night ravished by a storm. As he makes his way towards Vasudeva, he stops due to a flooding river and tries his best to cross it. Ultimately, Lord Vishnu's snake, Shesh Naag comes to the rescue and shields Vasudeva from the storm. As the snake protects Vasudeva, he carefully crosses the river. Everytime Krishna's feet touch the water, the level of water decreases. Vasudeva is awestruck by the miracle he just witnessed and moves on. As he makes his way into the Gopa household, he finds everyone asleep. He leaves the baby beside Yashoda, filled with sorrow and returns with the other baby.

As soon as Kansa finds out about the baby, he decides to murder it in cold blood. Devaki begs him not to kill it and pleads that the prophecy must have been wrong as her daughter isn't meant to bring the end of Kansa but to no avail. When Kansa tries to kill the baby, it transforms into a Devi ( goddess ) and warns Kansa of his end. "Your end will come soon and he is already alive in your kingdom". She tells him that his death will be timely and then vanishes.

Kansa believes the prophecy to be partially untrue and sighs with relief. He lets his sister and Vasudeva live in a separate palace, unaware about Krishna until the latter's youth. Little did he know that he would meet his end at the hands of Lord Krishna

Author's Notes

I read this story from Amar Chitra Katha as a kid and loved it instantly. My grandma recited this to me again over the years and I hear other slightly different versions of the same story all the time. Little details like how Kansa loved his sister Devaki so much that he had locked her in gold chains and handcuffs make short stories like this ever so interesting. I've also encountered numerous theories behind Kansa's logic in imprisoning Devaki and Vasudeva in the same room. Kansa is supposed to be the embodiment of evil in this story, yet he was considered the most devoted towards Shiva. Even though he is the mightiest king in the subcontinent at the time, his ego destroys him. There are several elements of the story that I questioned when I first read it. I couldn't imagine what Yashoda might have been through after realising that her daughter was gone. I speculated that she might not have realised it, but that seems highly unlikely. From the stories I've read, Yashoda gradually realises the divine nature of her child. Krishna goes on to kill every demon Kansa sends his way and continues to spread dharma in the Mahabharata.

Image of Young Krishna from Amar Chitra Katha

I loved these graphic comics more than perhaps Marvel or DC because I would see these gods in temples around India too. Something that really fascinated me and I would always pick Krishna!

Reading Notes: Week 10 Part A

 THE CHILDHOOD OF KRISHNA

Growing up, Lord Krishna was a mischievous kid that loved to steal butter from the neighbours. However, Krishna did not have a normal childhood. His maternal uncle- Kansa was hell bent on killing him, as he believed that Krishna would be the end of him. Kansa sent several demons to Vrindavan to end Krishna. Each time, Krishna would slay the demon and tales of his glory would spread around the town. One such demon was Putana. She came to Vrindavan to kill young Krishna and ended up dead.

THE YOUTH OF KRISHNA

King Kansa believed that killing Balarama would torment Krishna and sent one of the strongest demons on earth, Pralambha to kill him. The demon took the form of a deer and wooed the boys into playing a game. He changed forms after the game and took Balarama to the forest with great speed and Krishna wasn't able to catch him. Balarama ended up crushing the demon's skull and killing him without Krishna's help. Kansa decided to leave the two boys alone for longer and they forgot about their troubles.

As a young boy, Krishna would stroll off to the neighbourhood and steal butter from pots.
